Speech Therapy and Its Importance

Speech Therapy

Communication is one of the essential factors that build a community. Without communication, socializing with people around us would practically be an impossible task. Our community can never grow and develop if no one ever talks to each other. However, in some cases, people attain certain disabilities and disorders which interfere with their ability to properly execute speech. This disorder can cause a decline in the person’s self-esteem and lower one’s confidence.

Speech therapy is one of the fastest and most effective ways to cure such speech and language impairments. Speech therapy includes the treatment and evaluation of problems and disorders related to proper communication. Speech-language pathologists or SLPs perform speech-related treatments and therapy sessions. The treatment of speech disorders includes articulation therapy and other disorder-related procedures.

People with speech and language impairments may have problems producing sounds. It also involves a list of other inabilities such as stuttering, repetition of words, difficulty in tone formation, fluency in pronunciation, elongating words, blinking several times while talking, etc. These conditions vary from person to person. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are more likely to have Speech and Language impairments. But adults can develop such conditions as well.

Usually, damage in the vocal cord, muscles, nerves, and other throat-related structures causes speech disorders. Moreover, Respiratory weakness, strokes, polyps or nodules on the vocal cord, and vocal cord paralysis can also take part in such disorders. Similarly, various medical and developmental conditions also play a major role in causing speech and language impairment. These conditions include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), strokes, dementia, oral cancer, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), traumatic brain injury, etc. Trauma plays a major role in causing speech disorders and other related conditions.

Speech Disorders:

Speech therapy is essential for treating disorders and conditions such as,

Articulation disorders:

People suffering from articulation disorder have difficulty in producing certain sounds of particular words. In this disorder, people usually add, remove or drop letters in a word to alter the sound it. For example, not being able to make the sound of r and saying words like ‘wabbit’ instead of ‘rabbit’. This is mostly seen in children.

The therapy for this disorder usually revolves around the development of skills involved in the formation and vocalization of certain sounds and learning about speech rules.

Fluency disorders:

As the name suggests, fluency disorder causes the person to become incapable of controlling the speed, rhythm and flow of speech. This makes the person stutter and clutter while talking. Stuttering is a condition where a person gets stuck on a particular word during a conversation. People who clatter talk very hastily and merge the sounds of words together make it difficult for another person to understand.

Speech disorders require a highly individualized assessment of speech flow, including factors such as emotional components for treatment.

Resonance disorders:

This condition is usually caused by a physical factor such as obstruction of normal airflow in the nose and oral cavity. This causes an alteration in the vibrations that produce sound. This condition can be linked with cleft palate, swollen tonsils, and neurological disorders.

Receptive disorders:

The receptive disorder causes a person to have difficulty in understanding and processing the things that other people say. This makes a person have trouble following directions and performing tasks assigned by others. Autism, hearing loss, and head injury can cause receptive disorders.

Aphasia and Dysarthria are other disorders that affect the ability of a person to properly communicate. Stroke and other brain disorders are the main reason to cause aphasia. However, Dysarthria is usually caused by nervous system disorders and conditions including facial paralysis, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc.
