What is Sebaceous Cyst?

A sebaceous cyst is a common noncancerous cyst of the skin. This lining is like to the highest portion of a hair follicle and contains a fatty white, partially solid matter referred to as sebum. Sebum is produce by sebaceous glands of the epidermis. The surface of the skin, or epidermis, comprise of a very thin, safeguarding layer of cells that your body always sloughs off. The majority of epidermoid cysts build up when these cells, rather than shedding as usual, travel deeper into the skin and proliferate. Generally, this happens in parts where there are tiny hair follicles and bigger sebaceous glands, like on the face, neck, groin and upper back. The epidermal cells make up the walls of sebaceous cysts, and then create the protein keratin into the internal areas. The keratin is the thick yellow matter that occasionally draws off the cyst.

Those who have a sebaceous cyst experience inflammation in a region that may not be painful at first. It gets painful when it becomes infected and have swell. When the sac is punctured the keratin protein will come out of it and a boil-like abscess may create to build up. If this cyst starts to grow in the delicate areas of the body like the vagina, the individual may have complexity in urinating and feel pain during lovemaking. Some may even build up small horns on the top of the skin where the cyst has grown. Almost everyone is likely to experience these symptoms of sebaceous cyst. But further studies have shown that the condition is likely to happen on those persons who are already past the age of puberty. Many researches also revealed that men have a higher risk of incurring this skin problem. Abstaining of too much sun exposure also helps in avoiding this dermatological condition.

Symptoms of Sebaceous Cyst

The most common symptoms of sebaceous cyst that occurs to those who have this condition are the inflammation in the affected area. Even if the cyst is not infected, it can turn into swollen and very tender. If it is infected, it can give an extremely red color and is also painful. When it is inflamed, it might be difficult for the doctor to surgically remove it. Thus, he will generally postpone the surgery and prescribe an anti-inflammatory so that the inflammation will subside. When the lump has been ruptured as when it is damaged by puncture, it leaks the keratin protein on the skin. Common symptoms of sebaceous cyst in this case are an abscess which is like a boil. If the problem developed in the genital area, then the person is likely to notice symptoms such as problem during urination and pain while making love. They may as well notice symptom of sebaceous cyst such as a little horn growing on their skin where the condition has developed.

If the lump becomes infected or inflamed, other symptoms of sebaceous cyst may include:

  • A thick, yellow, smelly material that sometimes drains from the cyst
  • Redness, swelling and tenderness in the area, if inflamed or infected
  • A tiny blackhead plugging the central opening of the cyst
  • Grayish-white, cheesy, foul-smelling material that drains from the cyst
  • A small, round bump under the skin, usually on the face, neck or trunk

See your doctor if you have one that:

  • Grows quickly
  • Ruptures or becomes painful or infected
  • Occurs in a spot that's always irritated

For symptoms of sebaceous cyst, other characteristics of the cyst not yet mentioned may include, smooth feel and round shape. A sebaceous cyst may come out on nearly any location of the body, with the palms of the hands and soles of the feet being some exceptions. Usually, they come out in places on the body with more hair.

While everyone is likely to have this problem, there are those people who are more susceptible to experience the symptoms of sebaceous cyst. This skin problem is very likely to be experienced by those who are previously past their age of puberty (age 10 to 15 in girls and 12 to 18 in boys). Male as well have the higher possibility of incurring this condition particularly those who have a history of acne problems. Significant exposure to the sun and those who suffered skin injuries are also at higher risk of developing the symptoms of sebaceous cyst.

Causes of Sebaceous Cyst

Having a swollen hair follicle is one of the major causes of sebaceous cyst developing. Follicles are small openings in the layer of the skin from where hair grows in the body. These are associated to sebaceous glands, which secrete sebum. Abrasion or surgical wounds done to the hair follicles are possible to causes of sebaceous cyst. It is believed that spoil to a sebaceous gland is also possible to cause sebaceous cyst problem. This skin problem may also be caused by some inherited condition like nevoid basal-cell carcinoma and gorlin syndrome. White heads that have intensely seated and penetrated the skin are also likely to develop cell walls leading to this problem.

Due to increased activity of the hair follicles and the glands themselves, further cells are produced and expire in the space surrounding the hair. This causes the pore or opening around the hair follicle to become blocked. These cysts can also be caused by edematous hair follicles. Follicle glands that are blocked can lead to formation by inflammation, bacteria and fungi. Other causes of sebaceous cyst are improper hygiene, where cysts are blocked by debris on the scalp.

Injury to the hair follicle may become the cause. Perspiring heavily without the benefit of a shower will leave dried fluid and electrolytes on your scalp, which may cause blockage. From there, the sebaceous cyst may keep growing with additional production of oily substances and the breakdown of keratin, forming a fairly large bump on the skin. This bump is usually painless unless inflammation or infection has developed.

Diagnosis of Sebaceous Cysts

Sebaceous cysts, to the trained eye, are normally simply diagnosed by their appearance. In different cases, a biopsy or skin culture may be essential to rule out other conditions with a similar appearance. For example, an abscess a collection of pus under the skin or a lipoma (a non-cancerous mass of fatty tissue) can resemble a sebaceous cyst. To ensure a correct diagnosis of sebaceous cyst, you should see your medical doctor to receive a formal evaluation.

  • Recent trauma
  • Mass slowly growing over time
  •  “Cheese-like” material from cyst

Physical Exam

  • Firm to fluctuant, dome-shaped, mobile, flesh-to-yellow colored.
  • Commonly located on neck, face, upper back, and chest; ff due to trauma, on palms, buttocks, or plantar side of feet.
  • Varying in size (few millimeters to centimeters)
  • Cyst with or without comedo
  • symptom of ruptured or inflammation (tenderness, erythema, swelling)

Common tests used for a sebaceous cyst consist of:

  • CT scans, which help your medical doctor, find the best way for surgery and spot abnormalities
  • Ultrasounds, which identify the contents inside the sebaceous cyst
  • Punch biopsy, which involves removal of a small amount of tissue from the cyst to be examined in a laboratory for signs of cancer.

Doctors can generally make a diagnosis of sebaceous cyst by looking at the cyst. Your doctor may also scrape off skin cells and examine them under a microscope or take a skin sample (biopsy) for comprehensive analysis in the laboratory.
